Knee Shield Passes

Let’s face it a strong knee shield can be pretty annoying. Especially if the person on their back is fast and mobile. The number one rule from top position is to make sure you don’t allow the bottom player to get good grips. You’ll waste a lot of energy getting free and be in danger of getting swept.

Once you’re free of their grips you can start to control their legs and choose your preferred method to pass.

Beat That Pesky Knee Shield With An X Pass.

Aaron teaches a simple but effective X Pass to beat either a high or low knee shield.

The key details here are first flattening your opponent and getting your elbow inside the knee. Once that’s been achieved you can simply kick your leg back and hop over to pass the high knee shield. If they have a low knee shield with crossed ankles Aaron has a great detail where you twist your body to get your leg below their knee. From there you can kick back hard separating their ankles and hop over to pass.

This is a great pass for lighter more nimble grapplers. Especially if you’re up against a stronger, heavier, and hopefully slower opponent.
