You can expend a lot of energy trying to pass a strong closed guard. And if you’re new to Jiu Jitsu then it’s a position you are going to find yourself in rather often. So you’d better learn the correct techniques for guard passing or you’ll quickly gas out and then be easy pickings for any player with a strong bottom game.
Remember while raw strength and brute force may be useful occasionally, you will come up against stronger opponents and then proper technique, frames, leverage, momentium, and timing will win out. You are not going to pass the guard of a skilled opponent of similar size with strength alone.
