Playing Guard in BJJ
Not everyone can be a top. If you do BJJ for any length of time you are going to end up rolling with larger stronger opponents. And you will find yourself having to play guard. So you’d better be good at it. In fact many Jiu Jitsu players prefer to play guard. Be it Closed Guard, Open Guard or Half Guard, you’ll want to learn them all. And know when to use each, and how to transition from one to the other.
You’ll also want to build an attacking guard. With a strong repertoire of submissions and sweeps. Often the best way to prevent your guard being passed is to threaten an attack of your own. Be it a Kimura, Triangle, Armbar, Cross Lapel Choke, or Guillotine there are many submissions that are applied from a closed guard position. Open Guard offers excellent attacking opportunities for anyone with a strong leg lock game.
