Controlling Your Opponent in BJJ
You’ve taken them down and passed their guard, now what? You need to exert some form of top control to prevent them from immediately reguarding or retreating to a tactical stand up. The purpose of any top control position is essentially to pin your opponent in a position from which you can strike, or set up a choke or submission. Often you’ll transition from one top control position to another. Either to set up your prefered finish, or to keep your opponent from escaping.
The most common controlling positions in Jiu Jitsu are;
- Side Control
- Mount
- North South
- Knee on Belly
- Back Control
